INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR YOUNG PIANISTS „Chopin at Wawel”

Krakow, June 21-25, 2017

 

 RULES OF THE COMPETITION

 

I

1. International Competition For Young Pianists „Chopin at Wawel” organized by Fryderyk Chopin Secondary Music School in Krakow and “Porta Musicae” Artistic Association will take place on June 21-25, 2017.

 

2. Competition Auditions are open for public and will proceed in four age groups. Competition auditions of the III Group will proceed in two stages. Competition auditions of the IV Group will proceed in three stages.

 

II

Young pianists of any nationality can apply for the Competition according to four age categories:

I group – born after 2003

II group – born in years 2001 - 2003

III group –  born in years 1998 - 2000

IV group - born in years 1992-1997


Candidates may, after receiving the permission of Artistic Director of the Competition, to participate in the Competition in higher age group - eg. the candidate assigned to II age group (born in the years 2001 to 2003) may perform in the group III or IV by presenting a program assigned to the higher group. Each candidate may perform in only one age group.

 

III

1. Competition Application form (available on the website of the Competition www.chopinpodwawelem.com and on the website of the Fryderyk Chopin Secondary Music School in Krakow www.szkolamuzyczna.os.pl) should be send no later than May 15, 2017 by post on address:

with inscription „Chopin pod Wawelem”.

The following attachments should be send with Application form:

a) a copy of the document confirming the date of birth,

b) short CV,

c) recommendation letter written by principal or the chef of the piano department of the school that participant attends,

d) confirmation of the Application fee payment.

Competition fee is 25,00 Euro and have to be made to the following bank account number:

Title of payment: Donation for the Association, name of participant.

 

Candidates who on the day before the first day of the Competition are underage should attach to the application the statement from one of the parent or legal representative with their consent to participate in the Competition.

 

2. Application form send after May 15, 2017 will not be considered (the date of post stamp is deciding).

 

3. Participant will be informed (via phone or via e-mail) about acceptance for the Competition till May 31, 2017. No later than June 10, 2017 the Competition Office will publish the exact date and time of Competition Audition on the website www.chopinpodwawelem.com.

 

4. In case of participant resignation the application fee is not refundable.

 

IV

 

1. The participants are obliged to arrive for the registration to the Competition Office in appointed deadline.

 

V

1 The auditions will take place in alphabetical order beginning from the drawn letter and will be maintained throughout the entire Competition.  

 

2. To second stage of the III and IV group no more than 6 pianists will be allowed. To third stage of the IV Group no more than 3 pianists will be allowed.

 

3. Due to organizational and program matters Competition Office has the right to change the order of the Competition’s Auditions.

 

VI

The program must be performed by memory.

 

Group I

• one polonaise of the following:                                                                       

Polonaise G minor op. posth.

Polonaise B-flat major op. posth.

Polonaise A-flat major op. posth.

• optional work (or works) by Fryderyk Chopin. The total duration of the performance 10-12 minutes

 

Group II

• one nocturne or one etude of the following: 

Etude E major op. 10 no. 3

Etude E-flat minor op. 10 no. 6

Etude C-sharp minor op. 25 no. 7

• one etude excluding the following:

E major op. 10 no. 3, E-flat minor op. 10 no. 6, C-sharp minor op. 25 no. 7

• one impromptu or one polonaise (excluding the “Youthful Polonaises” G-minor op. posth, B-flat major op. posth, A-flat major op. posth and op. 22, op. 44, op. 53, op. 61) or one variation or one rondo

 

Group III

Stage I

• one etude of the following: 

C major op. 10 no. 1

A minor op. 10 no. 2

C-sharp minor op. 10 no. 4

G-flat major op. 10 no. 5

C major op. 10 no. 7 

F major op. 10 no. 8

A-flat major op. 10 no. 10

E-flat major op. 10 no. 11

C minor op. 10 no. 12

• one work of the following:

The total duration of the performance 20-22 minutes

 

Group IV 

Stage I

Six preludes in sequence of Preludes op. 28 from number 7 (A-major): for example no. 7-12, 8-13, 9-14 etc.

• Obligatory piece  - Berceuse (Lullaby) 

• optional work (or works) by Fryderyk Chopin.

The total duration of the performance 25 minutes.

 

Stage II

Recital of Fryderyk Chopin works of the following:

Ballade G minor op. 23

Ballade F major op. 38

Ballade A-flat major op. 47

Ballade F minor op. 52

Scherzo B minor op. 20

Scherzo B-flat minor op. 31

Scherzo C-sharp minor op. 39

Scherzo E major op. 54

Barcarole F-sharp major op. 60 

Fantasie F minor op. 49

Andante Spianato and Polonaize E-flat major op. 22

Polonaise F-sharp minor op. 44

Polonaise A-flat major op. 53

Polonaise - Fantasie A-flat major op. 61

The total duration of the recital 45 minutes.

 

Stage III (Final)

one Sonata

Pieces cannot be repeated in any stages.

 

Recommended score’s edition is Polish National Edition.

 

VII

1. Artistic Director of the Competition appoints the Chairman and members of the Jury. If necessary  Artistic Director has a right to change members of the Jury.

 

2. The composition of the jury will be announced to the public before the Competition.

 

3. The jury evaluates the performances of the participants and operates in accordance with the Rules of the Competition approved by the Artistic Director of the Competition. 

 

VIII

1. Participants will be provided with practice facilities (rooms and instruments) during the Competition by  Fryderyk Chopin Secondary Music School in Kraków.


2. Participants will be given rehearsal times before the Audition in the concert hall. Exact date of rehearsal together with the information about practice room will be send to participant no later than June 10, 2017. 

 

3. Participants of the III and IV Group who were allowed to the second stage will be given second rehearsal time in the concert hall. Participants of the IV Group who were allowed to the third stage (Final) will be given third rehearsal time in the concert hall.

 

IX

1. The list of Prizewinners will be approved by director of the Competition based on the decision of Jury.

 

2. There will be prizes and distinctions in each group.

I Prize - 8000,00 pln and recital at 4th Musical Autumn in Krakow (Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Krakow)

II Prize - 4000,00 pln

III Prize - 2500,00 pln

*The amount of the above prizes is the amount given after deducting 10% of the flat rate tax paid from the amounts above PLN 760, According to art. 30 sec. 1 point 2 of the Personal Income Tax Act.

 

3. The list of Prizewinners and the prizes will be announced in public.

 

4. Prizewinners of the First Prizes of previous editions of the Competition (national editions in 2015 and 2016) cannot participate in the same age group.

 

X

1. Jury has right to change the system of prizes or not to award some of them. However, prizes cannot be lower or higher than those specified in the Rules of the Competition, and the amount allocated for the prizes cannot be increased.

 

2. The Jury’s decisions are final and not revocable.

 

XI

1. Prizewinners are obliged to take part in the winner’s concert at the end of the Competition for free. The winner’s concert will be held on June 25, 2017. Unjustified absence on winner’s concert will be understood as the resignation from the award.

 

2. The program of the winner’s concert will be established by the Chairman of the Jury, after the consultation with the performers. 

 

XII

1. Participants are obliged to provide Competition Office free license to use their artistic performances and also give the Competition Office dispose to the rights to them in the following fields of exploitation:

– recording and reproduction: production by any technique copies of the performances, including magnetic and digital recording technology;

– disseminating: broadcasting and re-broadcasting and public sharing of the performance’s recordings in such a way that everyone has access in their own preferred time and place.

 

XIII

1. In all organizational matters, outside the competence of the Jury, the Artistic Director of the Competition has the right to make decisions, which are final and not revocable.
